.the foolishness of God.
29 September 200818For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God . . . 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength. 26Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. 30It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” 1 corinthians 1
“this is the message of the cross…that we can be free…” one of my all time favorite worship songs from days past. i was encouraged by these verses today. it’s one of those things when i know i’ve read this many times before, but God has allowed me to view these verses in a new light. why did God choose to show Himself in the way that He did? after all, wouldn’t it have had more impact if Jesus was this rich, influential, government or pharisaical leader? the jews demand miraculous signs and the greeks look for wisdom (verse 22) and the truth is that they got both from Jesus. more miracles wouldn’t have been enough, and his wisdom (luke 2:40,47,52) was and is unmatched. the text indicates that He chose the “lowly things of this world” so that we can boast in the Lord and not in our own accomplishments. imagine if our acceptance was based upon our GPA or GRE score. thankfully it’s not, and His kingdom is actually much more easily accessible. i have mentioned before (in a sermon) about my insecurities as a Ph.D. chemist and as a pastor. i’m so thankful that my identity revolves around who He is and what He did for me, and not on anything that i have ever accomplished. praise the Lord! His “foolishness” is so much greater than the scraps of my intellect and wisdom. recognizing this in my life gives me much security and peace.
